Emotional Freedom Technique
Do you struggle with emotions that can stop you from living your life to the full? Maybe you stay at home to avoid these emotional triggers, and then find when you do venture out into the world you find yourself feeling even worse? Perhaps you find yourself feeling stuck with thoughts that go around and around in your head. Do you have irrational fears or phobias? Emotional Freedom Technique might be something to consider as a another self care technique to help you process how you are feeling.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an emotional healing self-management technique. EFT is based on the assumption that negative emotions come from disruptions in the body’s energy system. EFT draws on acupuncture’s theories of energy within the body and our understanding of emotional trauma to become a form of ‘psychological acupressure’.
However, unlike acupuncture where needles are used to restore the body’s balance in EFT relief is achieved by tapping on the various energy meridians in the body. This tapping restores balance within the body that become disrupted when we experience, or emotionally re-experience trauma. The process of self-healing, care and nurturing we experience through tapping creates balance the energy centres in the body. The experience is intensified if there is positive self-talk and thinking used along with the tapping. The aim is to preserve the memory of the incident but to remove the emotional charge associated with it.
EFT is easy to learn and is ideal for self-help.
There are many sites that you can visit on the internet that will explain the history of EFT and provide demonstrations of the technique so you can incorporate EFT into your self-care routine. Steve Wells M.Psych and Dr David Lake have written a book Enjoy Emotional Freedom which I have read and found to be very good, they also have a site called EFT Downunder where they detail the process of EFT and how to use to relieve emotional trauma. This is a great site to visit first before you explore other sites on the web. (I do not receive any incentive for recommending this site)
